Empty Inside: A Playful Display Font for Handmade Labels & Printables

If you've ever spent 20 minutes tweaking letter spacing on a candle label only to realize the font looks stiff or too serious—Empty Inside is the gentle, joyful reset your shop needs. As a maker who designs printable wall art, boutique gift tags, and seasonal SVG bundles, I reached for this display font during last year’s holiday rush—and haven’t put it down since.

Empty Inside isn’t just “cute.” It’s thoughtfully playful: rounded, airy, and softly structured, with just enough bounce in its curves to feel handmade without sacrificing clarity. The letters have subtle inner cutouts—like chalk-drawn outlines or hand-cut stencils—which give them dimension and texture, especially when printed or cut from vinyl. That visual rhythm makes it instantly recognizable on product packaging, digital mockups, or even tiny ¾-inch sticker sheets.

I use Empty Inside most often for short, high-impact text: names on baby shower invitations, flavor names on artisan soap labels, “Open When…” headers on planner printables, and cheerful phrases on farmhouse-style wooden signs. Its uppercase and lowercase sets work beautifully together—unlike some playful fonts that force you into all-caps mode. And because it includes numbers, punctuation, and Cyrillic characters, I’ve shipped bilingual welcome boards to Canadian and Eastern European customers without swapping fonts mid-design.

For Cricut and Silhouette users: Empty Inside cuts cleanly at sizes as small as 14 pt on matte vinyl—no jagged edges or disconnected loops. I tested it on a batch of 1.25" round stickers for kids’ lunchbox labels, and every “O,” “B,” and “8” held its shape perfectly. Just avoid scaling below 10 pt for physical cut files; the inner whitespace starts to fill in visually, losing that signature lightness.

It shines brightest where personality matters most: wedding welcome signs (“Hello, We’re So Glad You’re Here!”), boutique clothing tags (“Handmade with Love”), birthday party banners, and printable classroom posters. One Etsy seller told me she swapped her old script font for Empty Inside on her children’s book-themed greeting cards—and saw a 30% increase in add-to-cart rates. Customers said the font “felt like a hug.” That’s not fluff—it’s emotional resonance built into the typeface.

Readability stays strong across mediums. On kraft paper labels? Crisp. On pastel-colored digital planner pages? Balanced. In black-and-white PDF printables? Still charming. I avoid using it for full paragraphs—but then again, no display font should carry that load. Empty Inside was made for titles, headings, focal words, and decorative accents—not body copy. Use it where your customer’s eye lands first.

Pairing is intuitive. For contrast and balance, I often combine Empty Inside with a warm, low-contrast sans serif (think Montserrat Light or Nunito) for supporting text on invitations or product descriptions. When designing SVG bundles for crafters, I’ll layer it over a delicate script font for monograms—say, “Emma’s Garden Co.” with “Emma’s” in Empty Inside and “Garden Co.” in a flowing handwritten style. The contrast highlights both voices: one friendly and grounded, the other elegant and personal.

The alternate character set is quietly brilliant. There are two versions of “A,” “R,” “S,” and “6”—some with fuller counters, others with tighter openings—so you can fine-tune spacing in tight layouts like jar labels or narrow banner flags. I used the alternate “0” (with a dot instead of a slash) on a line of minimalist tea towel prints, and it added just enough quirk without breaking cohesion.

File-wise, you’ll get standard OTF and TTF formats—no fuss, no extra installers. No ligatures or swashes clutter the set, which keeps things predictable for production. That simplicity is intentional: this is a display font built for doing real work, not collecting stylistic flourishes.

Licensing is straightforward—and vital to note. Empty Inside includes a commercial license that covers physical products (stickers, mugs, tote bags), digital downloads (PDF planners, Canva templates), SVG files for cutting machines, and client work (like custom invitation suites). You don’t need an extended license to sell items featuring this font—as long as you’re embedding it into final rasterized or vector artwork (not reselling the font file itself). Always double-check the license PDF before launching a new product line, but in practice, it’s been fully compatible with my Etsy shop, Shopify packaging, and wholesale stationery orders.

What sets Empty Inside apart isn’t just its charm—it’s how consistently it delivers across contexts. It looks equally at home on a rustic wooden sign photographed in natural light and on a neon-lit Instagram story graphic. It reads clearly on a 2" luggage tag and holds presence on a 24x36" printable nursery wall quote. That versatility is rare in playful display fonts, which often tip too far into “kiddie” or “too trendy” territory.

I keep Empty Inside in my top font folder—not as a novelty, but as a reliable tool. It helps my brand feel cohesive without being repetitive, warm without being saccharine, and distinctive without shouting. Whether you're printing 500 holiday gift tags or designing a single wedding welcome board, it brings intention and joy to the surface—exactly where your customers notice it first.
